Discover the real
Cyprus
That Aphrodite, the
Greek Goddess of Love, Lust and Beauty is said to
have been born of sea at Petra tou Romiou on the
South coast of Cyprus seems perfectly fitting, the
island still feels touched by such qualities as
well as haunted by the legacy of romantic legends
and ancient civilizations.
It is partly this confluence of natural beauty and
history that make Cyprus such an enduringly
appealing holiday destination. Of course these days
the island is just as readily associated with the
very modern hedonism of Ayia Napa and its world
renowned clubbing; it would be a shame though if a
preconception of Cyprus as a beach by day /club by
night type of destination were to put anyone off
exploring some of this beautiful islands less
visited corners.
Cyprus is an island of contrasts - between the
heady, fast paced nightlife and bustling resorts of
the southern coast and far less developed rural
landscapes and slow paced village life inland as
well as between the influence of European and
Eastern culture.
Away from the popular resorts of Larnaca and Ayia
Napa, Cyprus offers visitors beautiful landscapes
of rolling mountains, citrus groves, secluded sandy
beaches and unspoiled traditional villages as well
as a wealth of wonderful architecture.
To visit Cyprus is to take a journey through early
civilizations, all of which are contained within an
area of three and a half thousand square miles.
Greco-Roman amphitheatres jostle with Byzantine
monasteries, Venetian walls surround the capital,
Nicosia and, from an even earlier age, there is a
Neolithic settlement in Chirokitia, 32 kms from
Larnaca, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage
Site in 1998.
Most visitors will want to take a look at the
amphitheatre in Kourion but wherever you stay there
are likely to be a multitude of historical sites to
visit like the tombs of the kings in Paphos, and
the ruins of Salamis, the former capital of Cyprus,
in Famagusta. The old city of Famagusta is a kind
of living museum and a historical site within
itself. Famagusta is encircled by ancient walls
which date back to medieval times and are perfectly
preserved; with two original gates from Famagusta's
castle still standing. The beauty of Cyprus is that
is small enough that even a short stay should allow
you to see a diverse spectrum of it many
attractions.
One of the upsides of the islands enduring
popularity with tourists is that Cyprus holidays
are extremely affordable. Holidays to Cyprus is always
